Frequently Asked Questions!

  • Why Sigmas?
The sisters of Sigma Psi Zeta strive for excellence in every aspect, from academics to community to character. We are dedicated to our cause to empower Asian American women and our national philanthropy to Combat the Violence Against Women. Since being founded 11 years ago at UMD, we have made a significant presence as the largest multicultural Greek organization on our campus, including awards for "Highest Overall GPA" in our council for multiple consecutive semesters, "Chapter of the Year" for the past 2 years, "Most Improved Chapter", "Most Involved Chapter, "Most Social Chapter", and "Outstanding Organization of the Year". In addition, we have a strong national network that provides opportunities and bonds of sisterhood that reach far past graduation or the State of Maryland.
  • What makes our sisterhood so unique?
As an Asian-interest sorority, Sigma Psi Zeta differs from the Pan-Hellenic Greek sororities in that we are a smaller and thus more tight-knit organization that can connect on a cultural level. Being a smaller sorority allows our members to have a deeper connection with every one of her sisters, thereby forming closer relationships as well as more opportunities for leadership positions and growth. However, we are still large enough to affect change in UMD's community and beyond, and strive to be leaders in everything we do. Beyond size, what makes us unique is the diversity of the women that make up our sisterhood. Sisterhood is not a mold for women to fit into, nor does it make each sister who she is. Each individual is unique in her own way and contributes her talent, devotion, and energy to Sigma, giving us the character that we have today. Our sisters serve as an inspiration in many different ways - come to rush and see it all for yourself!
  • What is recruitment?
Recruitment is a period of time in which interested girls can meet with the sisters and learn more about Sigma Psi Zeta through social events and activities. It's completely free with no obligations at any time!
  • What is a bid?
A bid is a formal invitation to join the sorority at the end of the two rush weeks. In order to be eligible for a bid, you must attend (1) General Interest Meeting and at least (2) other rush events, and have a minimum 2.7 GPA.
  • What is the new member education process?
The new member education process is a process in which one who has formally accepted a bid learns about the history and values of the sorority in order to become a full-fledged member. During this process, intakes learn what it means to be a Sigma, and build invaluable relationships.
  • Are non-asians allowed to join?
Yes! Sigma Psi Zeta is an Asian-interest sorority, not Asian-exclusive. Many of our sisterships across the nation include sisters from a diverse range of racial and ethnic backgrounds who all agree with the core values of our sisterhood.
  • Does Sigmas haze?
Absolutely not. Sigma Psi Zeta enforces a strict non-hazing policy. Our organization's national philanthropy is to combat the violence against women, and stand up against the disrespect of women in all its myriad forms. Subsequently, to degrade intakes by hazing would contradict the core values our sisterhood was founded upon.
  • Why Greek Life?
There are many different benefits of Greek life that can enrich your life socially, culturally, AND professionally. Greek life enables you to be part of a close-knit community that reaches far past the University of Maryland and provides you with another family for life. The opportunities to network, take on leadership roles, develop social skills, and create priceless memories are limitless.
